Standing at 5'8", Donatello is the tallest of his brothers. He is also the 'lightest' and leanest which gives him a very 'lanky' appearance. Along with losing the vibrant yellow stripes that his normal hatchling form once sported, his skin became micro-scaled during mutation giving him a very smooth texture. His skin tone is olive green, mottled in places with darker 'scales'.  Being a reptile, his body temperature is slightly cooler than a human, but unlike his reptilian counterparts, he is able to thermoregulate. However, the colder months still effect him and extreme conditions can prove problematic.


Like his skin, the mutation also changed the colorful markings that once adorned his shell at infancy. His carapace (back) is greenish-brown with faint markings still visible. His plastron is beige in coloration. The bridge of his shell (sides) sport black markings which were carried over from his normal turtle pattern. Despite popular belief, a Turtle's shell is sensitive to touch and for Donatello, this is especially so along his sides. Another trait granted to him through mutation.. yes.. his sides are ticklish! This is something that all but Master Splinter and Michelangelo seem to know.  


Other physical traits that define Donatello are deep reddish-brown inquisitive eyes that would appear to unlock the mystery of anything by simply gazing upon it. You can practically see the wheels turning behind them as he over analyzes something or becomes lost in thought. His brain is a very busy place. The second youngest has a goofy smile that displays the gap between his two front teeth, something he was mutated with.



Aside from his training pads, Donatello sports a purple bandanna and white wrappings around his wrists, brown leather twine around his lower legs and around the bottom of his heals. This is to protect his feet from the muck and debris that washes in through the sewer grates. Being a mutant Turtle, shoes just aren't an option. (He did try to concoct shoes for mutant Turtles once upon a time, but they were too uncomfortable!) His 'wardrobe' is completed by the Bo staff that usually adorns his back, held in place by a leather strap connected to his belt.

Inquisitive by nature, growing up Donatello was curious about everything, and this is a trait that carried over into his teen years. From an early age he was interested in the science of things and discovering what made them 'tick'. Many a radios, video game systems and other electronics and appliances often fell victim to his curious nature. Being a quick learner and possessing an incredibly high IQ, reassembling the devices that he took apart came with great ease, much to his father's relief.

Donatello has a love for science and even at an early age, possessed an understanding that would classify him as a genius. When he sets his mind on a project, he usually sees it through despite any setbacks or distractions that his brothers often provide.


The purple-clad Turtle is the most reserved of his brothers. Being shy around strangers, he is usually quiet and stand-offish and is typically content with fading into the background. However, around family and friends, sometimes his mouth seems to run a hundred miles a minute, especially when he goes into full fledge geek mode. He often gets ahead of himself with technobabble and is usually reminded by his brothers that he should speak 'English', because not everyone understands 'nerd'.


While Donnie is the most passive of the group and would prefer talking things out rather than fighting, even he has his 'buttons', and not just the shiny red ones that adorn oh so tempting 'whos-it-whats-its'. Like anyone, Donatello is prone to frustration and one of his peeves is when his brothers assume that he knows everything. While the second youngest is certainly a genius, there are still things that he doesn't know and sometimes questions that seem innocent enough can feel as if they're testing his intelligence.

* April O'Neil-- The Brainy Reptile has had a crush on her ever since the first time  he laid eyes on her.

* Technology and Science-- being a self-proclaimed scientist, he is fascinated by anything that most would consider 'nerdy'. His brain is like a sponge, constantly soaking up information and miraculously retaining it every last detail.

* Junkyards-- yes, you read that correctly! The city's wasteland of discarded and seemingly hopeless items is a Wonderland to the Turtle in Purple. The lair is ran and maintained by items he has scavenged. Whenever time permits, he makes trips to the unpleasant landfill and 'saves' anything that may be useful to him. His lab has accumulated quite the collection, and his brothers often tease him about being a hoarder.


*Quiet time in his lab-- Being the most quiet of his brothers and a lover of peace, Donatello relishes in the tranquility of his lab and is happiest when surrounded by nothing but his own thoughts as he tinkers away at whatever project he is working on at the moment.


* Text books, electronic manuals, etc.-- Having an eagerness to learn, Donnie will read even the most complex and 'boring' educational books in his never ending quest for knowledge.


*Coffee!-- Pulling long nights is the norm for the Scincy Turtle, and a good cup of java is his fuel of choice.


*Computers-- What he considers one of the greatest inventions ever made. His PC is his window to the world and he has developed a passion for repairing the salvageable ones that he has rescued from the junkyard. His personal computer is something of an electronical wonder due to the customizations that he has been able to install over the years.  


*Electronics-- The early stepping stones to becoming who he is. During the early days, many were sacrificed in the name of learning. Now he contributes to the family with gadgets that make their lives easier.

* Family Feuds and disagreements-- Being the most passive of his brothers, Donatello would prefer to avoid arguments and disagreements. Still, he has been on the engaging end of such arguments. Heated strategical debates are something that he is no stranger to, and he and Leo have butted heads on a few occasions. The latest and most memorable was during the invasion. He soon regretted that moment when Leo was badly injured amd tossed through April's window.


* Being put on the spot-- Being the Brains of the operation, the others often look to him whenever a question arises and sometimes it becomes frustrating when he doesn't know the answer. One instance is when Leo asked him why he hadn't told him about a force field when the Purple-clad Turtle had no way of knowing. Sometimes their questions are redundant and whenever he's in a mood, the answers are delivered with a healthy dose of snark.  


* Mikey's pranks-- While his little brother means well and his mischievous gestures are usually performed to lift team morale, sometimes the stunts are damaging. Many of his projects have been destroyed due to his little brother's mischievous nature.


*When good inventions go bad!-- This has happened more times than the Brainy Turtle would like to admit. Aside from wayward mechanical creations, his lab has experienced several explosions. Donnie often refers to these as growing pains and rarely lets setbacks discourage him.


* Fighting-- this may be a shock considering he is a well trained ninja, but Donatello would much rather talk out issues rather than engage in combat. Unfortunately this tactic cannot be used against their enemies. While reluctant to fight, he will defend his family and friends with his life.


* Having his 'bag-of-tricks being referred to as a purse. Ugh! It's a man bag!


* Having his staff referred to as a 'stick'-- When he was younger, Donnie questioned why he was 'chosen' by the 'stick'. The Bo seemed like a boring weapon, but over time it has become an extension of him and certainly his weapon of choice.


*Insults about his 'gap'-- For the most part, his brothers know this is forbidden territory, but there are the occasional slips. Casey on the other hand has made it a source of teasing.


*Shredder and their enemies-- Well, for obvious reasons.

* Master Splinter- Formally a human by the name of Hamato Yoshi. Being mutated with the four baby Turtles, the mutant Rat became their father figure, teaching them and training them in ninjitsu.


*Leonardo- The leader of the group, Leo is considered to be the oldest.

*Raphael- Considered to be the second oldest, Raph is the muscle of the group, and a hot head.

*Michelangelo- Considered the 'baby' of the family, Mike is known for his pranks and loves to annoy Donnie. Despite these irritations, like the rest of his brothers, Don feels protective over him.

Along with his three brothers, Donatello started life as a normal red ear slider, a common species among the pet trade. However, fate dictated that he and his siblings were destined for something more. Fifteen years ago, he and his brothers were purchased by a man named Hamato Yoshi. It seemed that they were destined for a life within the confines of a glass aquarium, but that all changed when their new owner noticed strange activity taking place not too far from the small pet shop he had purchased his new pets from. Not one to turn his head to any wrong doing, Yoshi approached the scene and after a scuffle, a canister of glowing green goo was dropped, shattering beside them. The bowl was soon knocked from his hands, shattering into the glowing substance. Yoshi also came into contact and since he had previously stepped on a rat, the man transformed into a humanoid version of the creature. The baby turtles also mutated, transforming into humanoid versions of their former selves. Being infants, the four brothers required a parental figure, and it was a roll that Yoshi graciously and lovingly took on.


Knowing that he and his new sons could never be seen by human eyes, Yoshi took his new family to the sewer and found a safe place to raise them. Like his life before the mutation, Yoshi's name was left in the past and he became 'Splinter'. As his boys grew older, Splinter trained them in the arts, preparing them for a world that they would always have to defend themselves against. There would be enemies that wished to end them, and Yoshi knew that one day, his past would come back and threaten the lives that he held dear.


For fifteen years, Splinter protected his family underground, forbidding them from venturing to the world above, but the ninja master knew that the day would come when he could no longer shelter them. On their fifteenth 'mutation day' (also referred to as their birthday), the protective father finally granted his teenage boys permission to venture topside, and bombarded them with warnings, from strangers to the uncleanliness of public bathrooms.


Of course their first trip above ground wasn't uneventful. Along with being introduced to pizza, Donatello's whole world changed when he laid eyes on April for the first time. Not only was the red-head the first girl he had ever seen, but she became his first crush. It was the first time he had experienced what is often referred to as 'butterflies in your stomach', or experienced that warm tingly feeling that seemed to debilitate him.


The purple-clad Turtle watched on in horror as the girl and her father were abducted by 'men'. He and his brothers ran interference, but unfortunately during their first brawl, it became painfully obvious that they were incapable of fighting as one. Their less than stellar orchestrated fight resulted in the two humans being taken by the alien race known as the Kraang. Returning home in defeat, Splinter decides to forbid his sons from venturing topside until they learn to fight as a team. This didn't settle well with Donatello. His crush and her father were in trouble, and it was up to them to save her.. urm.. them!


Defying their father's orders, the brothers returned to the world above and executed their first rescue mission. Donatello managed to rescue the girl who finally introduced herself as April, but their efforts to rescue her father fell short.


April quickly became close to the Turtles, and Donnie's feelings became even stronger. Over time, her father was rescued, but due to a mistake on their part, he was mutated into a giant mutant bat. This caused April to feel resentment towards them, but fortunately that didn't last. Months after, Donnie was able to use retromutagen to reverse the mutation and transform Kirby back into human form.


Another human came into their lives in the form of a wild-man vigilante known as Casey Jones. Much to Donatello's dismay, Raphael's 'bestie' also developed feelings for April. This has caused friction between Don and Casey, but when the red-head isn't a source of contention between the two, they actually get along. Donnie and Casey like to throw insults at one another, but it's all in fun... for the most part.



Their young lives have been filled with adventure, some good and some tragic. A kraang invasion threatened to destroy New York and the stress that arose with pending doom caused tempers to flare. During the destruction, Donnie and Leo got into a strategic argument right before the group was forced to split.


Back at April's apartment, a very injured Leo was thrown through the window. Seeing his brother in such a condition caused Don to regret becoming so heated with Leo. Fortunately the leader wouldn't leave him on that note, but more heartache awaited them. Splinter was seemingly lost to the Shredder, and they were forced to leave the city before they were able to find him. They retreated to April's farmhouse, where Leo could recover in peace.


The leader's recovery was lengthy, but once he was back on his feet, the Turtles returned to the city to clean up the mess, and look for their missing father.
