Karai (born Hamato Miwa) is the antagonist-turned-protagonist in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series. The birth daughter of Master Splinter, the adoptive daughter of Shredder (Oroku Saki) and the older adoptive sister of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo, she previously served as a highly decorated, yet infamously corrupt, rebellious, arrogant and condescending heiress of the fearsome Foot Clan, a master kunoichi (female ninja), and the 16-year-old adoptive daughter of the Shredder, whom she is very loyal to with close ties, initially considering him her "father" (despite frequently being rebellious and arrogantly argumentative). She is voiced by Kelly Hu in this variation.
Karai was also revealed to be Hamato Yoshi's long-lost biological daughter, as shown in "Showdown, Part 2" whom he had believed had also perished in the fire fifteen years ago.


Hamato Miwa is the only child and willful daughter of Hamato Yoshi (Splinter) and the late Tang Shen, who was taken away from Splinter by Oroku Saki when she was just an infant and renamed Karai. Initially, she was the conniving, scheming, sly, treacherous, sneaky, backstabbing, harmful and malevolent sworn enemy who constantly kept scheming harm to Splinter and the Turtles.
It is implied in this version that Karai is far more dangerously deadly than more people let on. She was most likely demoted from her rank whilst serving at the Foot Clan movement for being too rebellious, relentless, arrogant, sardonic, cantankerous, obstinate, willful, snidely, egotistical, cocky and haughty. Although she was capable of behaving normally and politely, she had absolutely no problem with going behind other's backs scheming plots that involve capturing, harming, threatening, even killing innocents, and would absolutely do so if necessary without showing or feeling any hesitation or guilt. Karai, although not sadistic, held a dark secret behind her polished public image, and although she didn't appear to be a menace upon her first glance, she is extremely cold and calculating, sly, treacherous, dangerously unpredictable, and a volatile loose cannon. Despite all this, she soon became a loyal, heartfelt and trusted ally after genuinely seeing the truth about her parents' past (thanks to Splinter showing her photographs of himself as a man with Tang Shen) and grew even closer to Leonardo and Splinter


in addition to forming friendly relations with the other Turtles.
After finally (and legitimately) learning the full chronological truth about her family's past during "Vengeance is Mine", Karai was inadvertently mutated into a feral and predatory purple-and-white serpent (where an extra chemical ingredient enabled her to shift back and forth and assume hybrid forms) whilst mistakenly, furiously and over-confidently trying to single-highhandedly slay Shredder, but she retains some of her humanity and original personality (in addition to receiving a dose of Retro-Mutagen), enabling her to transform between a human and a serpent. She is a major recurring character in the show, appearing for a total of 31 episodes. After the death of Shredder and her corrupted sensei Hattori Tatsu, Karai (along with her best friend from Japan named Shinigami) becomes the rightful heiress to the Foot Clan throughout the fifth and final season, reworking it to become rightful allies with the Turtles. She is Leonardo's love interest throughout the series and is one-eighth Chinese through her maternal great-grandfather
